The library at Whitman Elementary School was packed to the brim during the morning of Nov. 18, as kindergarten and first grade students were given a chance to hear from and interact with Tom Watson, the author of the “Stick Dog” series.
During the roughly 45-minute session, Watson visited with the Bulldogs to discuss the series while leading a hands-on drawing tutorial for five of the characters from “Stick Dog.” He also answered a range of questions, offering insights into the writing process and the creative journey behind the books.
Toward the end of the gathering, Watson solicited feedback on potential food-related storylines for future installments before pitching a new idea for an upcoming entry.
“I think keeping a journal is a great way for young people to discover their writing ability and style,” Watson said when asked what advice he would give to young aspiring writers. “Not a diary, but a journal where they can write (and draw) absolutely anything. Write how and about whatever you want. Use your own voice. Don’t try to copy someone else.”
